VRT Calculator – FAQs

What is Vehicle Registration Tax (VRT)?
Vehicle Registration Tax (VRT) is a tax on most new and used vehicles registered in Ireland, including imported vehicles. VRT must be paid when the vehicle is formally registered in Ireland, within 30 days of the vehicle arriving in Ireland. When the vehicle is registered, a vehicle registration number is issued to the vehicle owner.
Why should I use the VRT calculator?
Simply, our VRT calculator makes the process of calculating VRT straightforward and far simpler than if you were to manually calculate it through Revenue. Our calculator only requires the registration number of the vehicle as opposed to all the detailed vehicle information which are required by Revenue Ireland. We provide detailed reports as output, containing all of the fields ordinarily requested by Revenue.
How is VRT calculated?

The calculation of Vehicle Registration Tax (VRT) in Ireland requires many variables related to the vehicle.

  Variables include:

  1. Open Market Selling Price (OMSP): the nominal value used for VRT calculations as provided exclusively by Revenue Commissioners.
  2. Vehicle registration and classification: month and year of registration (according to first registration within a jurisdiction), EU vehicle classification, vehicle make, model, and type, and the number of doors.
  3. Vehicle details: vehicle engine type, engine capacity, and total odometer mileage. For vehicle variants, the body type and version must be included.
  4. Emissions variables: vehicle CO2 emissions at the time of manufacture.
  5. VRT Classification Category: the vehicle’s classification must be included. Classifications used in Ireland include A, B, C, D and M. These must correspond to European classification equivalents M1, N1, and N2.
What are the different categories of VRT?

There are four VRT categories used in Ireland, which correspond to European classification equivalents.

  The categories are:

  1. A (EU: M1): passenger vehicles, including saloons, hatchbacks, Jeeps, coupés, MPVs, minibuses, and convertibles.
  2. B (EU: N1): light commercial vehicles designed to carry no more than 3.5 tonnes, including car derived vans, Jeep derived vans, and crew cabs.
  3. C (EU: N2): larger commercial vehicles, agricultural vehicles, or buses with up to 10 seats designed to carry no more than 12 tonnes, including trucks, large vans
  4. D (EU: N/A): emergency vehicles such as ambulances, road construction transport equipment, and fire engines.
How is VRT calculated for cars?
Vehicle Registration Tax (VRT) calculations for cars must consider multiple variables and requires access to information on the vehicle as well as its classification category in Ireland. The calculation process is provided by Revenue to assist individuals in Ireland, but it may be challenging or time-consuming, which is why we recommend you make use of our VRT calculator and our vehicle registration services.
How is VRT calculated on cars from the UK?
As of 1 January 2021, vehicles imported into Ireland from the UK must pass through customs and, consequently, while the calculation of tax Vehicle Registration Tax (VRT) on imported vehicles from the UK remains the same, customs duty and VAT are now chargeable on UK imports. We recommend that you use our Customs, VAT & VRT Calculator calculator to determine the Customs, VAT & VRT for any vehicle imported from Northern Ireland or Great Britain and to retain our services if you require assistance importing your vehicle(s) from the UK.
How accurate is your VRT calculator?
Our VRT calculator provides an estimate of the amount of VRT owed on imported vehicles. The source of the data for the VRT calculator is the Revenue database and we endeavour to provide customers with a VRT calculator that is as accurate as possible. However, VRT rates are subject to change by the revenue commissioners and sometimes there might not be an exact match for your vehicle in the revenue database.
Where do I register for VRT?
Vehicle Registration Tax (VRT) must be paid at the National Car Testing Service (NCTS) centre. Applicants who wish to register for VRT must present themselves to the NCTS along with all relevant documentation at the appointed time and register for VRT using all forms and calculations, including personal identification, vehicle purchase details, and more. The NCTS does not provide vehicle valuation services, so you must complete VRT calculations yourself.
When do I have to pay VRT?

Under most circumstances, Vehicle Registration Tax (VRT) must be paid in full and the vehicle must be registered within 30 days (1 month) after the vehicle’s arrival in Ireland. There are a few limited circumstances under which this does not apply. The VRT can be paid directly at the National Car Testing Service (NCTS) when registering for VRT.

Motor dealer purchases typically include vehicle registration directly at the point of sale and will submit the VRT and VAT directly to Revenue.

What is a Statistical Code?
Statistical Codes are used by Revenue to identify the unique make, model, variant, and version of a vehicle. Revenue uses Statistical Codes to determine the Open Market Selling Price (OMSP) of a particular vehicle. When using a VRT calculator, the Statistical Code eliminates errors and saves time and effort. Enter the code and the vehicle details will self-populate.
How can I register a new or used vehicle in Ireland?
In order to register a new or user vehicle in Ireland, you need to makes a booking with the NCT service and also provide the nessaery documentation as outline in Vehicle Registration Tax Process guide
