NOx Emission Levy Calculation

VRT Ireland assists clients in Ireland with customs duties, vehicle registration, and customs clearance agent services, as well as providing practical tools such as our VRT calculator which includes the NOx levy. A NOx Emission Calculation is provided as part of our VRT calculator. Additionally, NOX emissions should be detailed in the vehicle certificate of conformity and V5C document.

Since 1 January 2020, all diesel and petrol passenger cars and SUVs are subject to a Nitrogen Oxide (NOx) levy dependent upon the quantity of emissions produced per kilometre. Various emissions thresholds exist, with a maximum cap of €4,850 for diesel vehicles and €600 for all other vehicles.

Take advantage of our robust, up-to-date VRT calculator with NOx emission calculation today.

NOx Emission Calculation – FAQs

What is a NOx levy?
The Nitrogen Oxide (NOx) levy was imposed on all petrol and diesel vehicles classified as Category A in Ireland, which includes passenger vehicles and SUVs. The NOx Emissions Levy was imposed on 1 January 2020 and supersedes the diesel surcharge which was in effect previously in Budget 2019.
What are NOx emissions?
Nitrogen Oxides (NOx) are highly reactive and poisonous gasses that are created by combustible fuels such as diesel and petrol which are burned at high temperatures. NOx emissions are pollutants released by vehicles, machinery, and equipment that use internal combustion engines or otherwise require fuels to be burnt at high temperatures.
What are the NOx emissions of my car?
The Nitrogen Oxide (NOx) emissions of your car are recorded on the Certificate of Conformity (CoC), which must be provided by either the vehicle seller or the vehicle’s manufacturer in the case of new vehicles. The amount of NOx emissions produced by your vehicle are measured in milligrams of NOx emissions produced per kilometre.
