What does a customs agent do?

What is the customs declaration process?
In Ireland, the customs declaration process is a complex task, consider retaining a customs agent in Ireland to perform these tasks on your behalf.
Private individuals can register for an EORI number using myAccount or ROS online portals. Once you has a valid EORI number, you are permitted to import/export goods from abroad.
Next, the customs duties owed and VAT owed must be calculated. For vehicles, additional considerations must be made such as VRT. Customs, VAT, and VRT calculators can provide an estimation accounting for the total owed to customs authorities and Revenue Ireland.
Importers must submit their customs declaration and associated paperwork, this is the most complicated step for importers. Buyer/seller information, importer/exporter information, product information, transport, commodity codes, customs procedures and more must all be provided for customs authorities to evaluate the declaration.
Once the total customs duties owed have been calculated and declaration submitted, you must make payment through myAccount or ROS to cover this cost. Insufficient funds will lead to a failed process, so ensure you’ve added enough to pay the full amount.
The declaration process is completed when customs duties and VAT have been paid in full.

What to look for in a customs clearance agent?
In order to become a customs agent (not to be confused with customs officers, who work with Garda and other agencies) in the Republic of Ireland, individuals can register as an Authorised Economic Operator (AEO) or in Northern Ireland as a Trusted Trader. These accreditations are not prerequisites to becoming a customs agent in Ireland, but they do add reliability and ensure clients that the trader is operating in good faith and adheres faithfully to customs regulations in Ireland.
How much does it cost to clear customs?
The cost of clearing customs for products imported into the Republic of Ireland from outside the European Single Market, e.g. Northern Ireland or Great Britain, depends on many factors and variables, as well as the type of commodity being imported. Generally, customs duties, excise, and VAT apply. The current VAT rate (as of 1 March 2021) is 23%.
Thus, to give an example, a private individual who purchases a BMW 3 series in the UK for £10,000 will be required to pay 10% customs duty and 23% VAT.
The customs calculation is as follows:
£10,000 = €11,707
€11,707 @ 10% = €1170.70
The VAT calculation is as follows:
€11,707 + €1170.70 = €12,877.70
€12,877.70 @ 23% = €2961.87
The total customs clearance is as follows:
€1170.70 + €2961.87 = €4132.57
